Alabama Coalition Against Rape
In 1994, the rape crisis centers in the state of Alabama came together for a meeting initiated by Julie Lindsey, the coordinator of the Montgomery Rape Crisis Center, the Council Against Rape. This was the beginning of what was to become the Alabama Coalition Against Rape (ACAR). The group became incorporated on October 23, 1995, filed bylaws, and began meeting regularly.
By 1997, a Violence Against Women Act grant for rape prevention education became available to ACAR through the Alabama Department of Public Health, and a Prevention Educator was hired. ACAR was awarded a Violence Against Women Act grant by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to conduct law enforcement trainings across the state of Alabama. In 2001, ACAR received funding from the Department of Justice. In 2010, we received SASP and in 2015, PREA was awarded.
- Central Alabama CrimeStoppers is proud to announce a newly formed partnership with ACAR (Alabama Coalition Against Rape).
- CrimeStoppers will partner with ACAR to help provide training, resources, and awareness to law enforcement agencies throughout the State of Alabama.
- CrimeStoppers believes the resources ACAR provides will help enhance law enforcement’s efforts, while also providing survivors with support and resources. With over 17 crisis centers, ACAR makes its services and resources available to all Alabama residents at no charge.
- ACAR currently provides the following services:
- Training for allied professionals through workshops and conferences.
- Education of the public about sexual assault through prevention programs, website, quarterly newsletters, and other materials.
- Advocacy for sexual assault survivors with statewide agencies and in the formation of public policy.
- Support for sexual assault program staff, through training, technical assistance, and access to the ACAR resource library of books, videos, and training materials.
- Networking with other statewide agencies that address issues of violence against women.
- Providing information, technical assistance, and resources to anyone seeking to learn more about the prevalence and prevention of sexual violence.
